STOCKDALE MAKES IT TWO IN A ROW!
Tim Stockdale’s invincible form wowed a capacity crowd in Bordeaux this afternoon, snatching victory from a world class field of horses and riders when he won the Bordeaux Grand Prix, riding John Bosher’s sensational grey mare, Fresh Direct Corlato.
Fresh from their victory in the CSI3* Nantes Grand Prix last weekend, the combination jumped one of only four double clear rounds of the competition to take home the €18,000 first prize. Germany’s multiple Olympic Gold Medalist, Ludger Beerbaum finished in second place and Switzerland’s Olympic Silver medalist, Beat Mandli took third spot.
After finishing in second place in the Links of London Grand Prix at Olympia - The London International Horse Show just before Christmas, Tim, Chairman of the BSJA Marketing Committee, and the 10 year-old Holsteiner mare (by Corofino I) have gone from strength to strength, launching their 2007 season in amazing style with two major Grand Prix wins in as many weeks!
Results as follows:-.
CSI-W Bordeaux Grand Prix
1st Tim Stockdale GBR / Fresh Direct Corlato – 0/0 41.34 secs
2nd Ludger Beerbaum GER / Enorm – 0/0 42.20 secs

WHAT A YEAR IT’S BEEN!
What an incredibly busy year! From a hectic schedule of shows at home and abroad, to prime-time celebrity TV - we’ve done it all! So, here’s the up-date.
In March, Tim was sent a new ride, Animation, owned by Di and Russell Jay-ing. The bay mare, formerly ridden by Geoff Luckett settled in well and soon adjusted to Tim’s training and different riding style.
Tim also purchased a half share in a 6yr old mare by Lux Z, owned by John Steels from Midland Equestrian. Talori, as she’s called, had only been in the country a few weeks and had little show experience because of having a foal two years ago. She is now coming on well and been busy at shows during the summer.
Debonair, owned by Leila Azmoudeh is in foal to Kanan and will give birth next Spring. We are all looking forward to seeing if the newcomer be as striking as Debonair’s first foal ‘Cord’ who is 2yrs old and looking lovely.
Bad news came when Ronnie had a bad accident which wrote off our small lorry. She was hit from behind by a speeding truck while sitting in stationary traffic. Fortunately, the three horses on board all walked away unharmed, after being cut out by the Fire Brigade. Ronnie suffered from severe whiplash and glass embedded in the back of her head, but quickly recovered. The horses involved showed no side effects and are still good travellers.
After a busy indoor season last winter, we needed another rider to help Tim with the day to day training and show appearances. Adam Botham, 24, therefore, started work in April and fitted into the team immediately. Adam had previously worked in several top yards and has also run his own dealing yards. This year, he has had plenty or work, especially whilst Tim was away working on BBC-TV’s “Only Fools on Horses, “produced as part of Sports Relief week by Endemol.
ONLY FOOLS AND HORSES WORK
Only Fools On Horses turned out to be a lot more hard work than we ever imagined. We had been involved in the Faking It! TV show 5yrs ago and knew that it was tough training just to get one person to a reasonable level in four weeks. Somehow, the pain of that experience had been forgotten when we signed up with Endemol to train no less than 16 novice celebrities. More planning meetings took place than Tim ever thought possible. Understandably, Health and Safety was the main issue, and those meetings were hard-going, as the Endemol team’s experience of working with horses was sparse, to say the least.
The most difficult thing to start with was fitting everyone in, as the celebrities involved were travelling all over the place and so was Tim, on his last run of shows before he stopped for six weeks. Before the celebs could begin they all had two medicals (one from the BBC and one from Endemol); and then they had to be kitted out with body protectors and hats. Tim had to see each of the celebrities at their chosen riding school. These schools were just to get them started off so that when they went into intensive training they could at least manage the rising trot. This proved to be a logistical nightmare as the celebs were scattered across England, with some also in Scotland and Ireland.
Tim had a run of shows to do before starting the programme, including his last competition in Lisbon. Tim had a good start there, with a third in the Grand Prix on Fresh Direct Corlato (Ruby) owned by John and Sue Bosher. Then, on Lisbon’s last day, during the Nations Cup, Tim had a massive fall. Corlato put a foot back over the water and as the water was deep, it bought her down fast and hard. Tim was thrown 15 feet clear but suffered broken ribs. Ruby made it back to her feet but was badly lamed.
Back in the UK, she went for bone scans and tests to see where the problem was. It turned out to be very serious break of the humerus. Ruby would be off for the rest of the season.
Meanwhile, on the Fools On Horses front, everything was being prepared at Waresley near St Neots where Eddie Stibbe had kindly offered his yard for the daily training. The horses, grooms equipment and feed were arriving in wait for the first big day. Training got off to a slow and painful start, with one celeb in plaster with a broken elbow by the end of the first week, Tim had his doubts as to whether they would get any of them over a jump, let alone round a full course. Tim and his training team - Fred Bergendorf, Mary-Ann Trevor Roper, Jenny Ward and Mia Korenika - all worked very hard.
The broadcast show itself was tougher than expected. Everyone thought it would all run smoothly once they were on location at Towerlands, now transformed into a full-blown film set. Starting at 6 a.m. and finishing at 1 a.m. made sure everyone was exhausted, from trainers, celebs, grooms, crew and horses. Nerves were on edge 99 % of the time and much hair was thinned!
Obviously it all came together and although it was an endurance test for everyone involved, the show on prime time BBC TV proved to be a great success. There’s even talk of a repeat performance sometime in the future.
Tim hasn’t even watched the broadcast tapes - and doesn’t want to think about doing it again - YET!
British Open goes well
Back in April at The British Open at the Hallam Arena in Sheffield things went well; Corlato qualified for the final day and jumped well. Fresh Direct Glenwood Springs (Woody) owned by John and Sue Bosher and Fresh Direct Animation were both placed in classes.
Outdoor Start at Hollowell
We started outdoors at David and Jayne Rogers’ show, Hollowell, in Northampton. As always, all the horses were very spooky and fresh. The weather stayed fine and the weekend was a success.
Addington’s Winning Streak
The Addington Spring Classic was a great success. Woody, Ruby and Roland II, owned by Derek and Jenny Ward, all won classes. Tim had four wins in total.
Thame tamed
In preparation for the international season Tim went to Thame Show where Corlato jumped very well and won the Trial. Woody also went well and won his class too.
Miss In Maubeuge
Maubeuge France is always a good start for the international season, but this year it was a tough show and although the horses jumped well they just missed out on top prizes.
Windsor Changes Not For The better The Royal Windsor Horse Show has changed and not really for the better in most riders’ opinions. The schedule is now so restrictive that it’s difficult to get all the horses there, which is something Tim has always tried to do in the past. It was a difficult choice to make but Tim took Fresh Direct Corlato, Fresh Direct Animation, Fresh Direct Glenwood Springs, Fresh Direct Una, owned by Colin and Ann Garratt, Pircolando M (Marco) owned by John and Janet Cosgrove and Cassia owned by Leila Azmoudeh.
They all jumped very well, Ruby won a big jump off class and was fifth in the Grand Prix, Annie finished second in a jump off class and Woody was placed third in a speed class.
Beating The Heat In Spain Madrid, Spain, followed on but the weather was very hot. It was almost 40 degrees both in the stables and in shade and the horses and riders found it tough. That didn’t stop Woody though; he won a very fast speed class with over 60 starters. Annie and Ruby had good placings, with Ruby fourth the first day and placed in the Grand Prix.
Toledo Steel Toledo was also very hot but good old Woody showed his steel and won the two classes he entered. Annie finished third in a class. Moving on to Lisbon, they went for the Nations Cup CSIO which is where Ruby had her bad fall. With Tim away filming Only Fools on Horses Adam Botham took over the reins at some other shows.
Adam Takes Over Adam took plenty of horses out throughout the time Tim was away. With regular visits to Weston Lawns, Addington, he also jumped the bigger classes at Castle Ashby and Berks Area. The latter show was Adam’s first big chance to jump some qualifiers with Tim’s horses and he did tremendously well. Cassia jumped three brilliant rounds and just missed a place at Horse of the Year show by being pushed into third place in the Foxhunter Qualifier.
Rusty At Royal Lancs Royal Lancashire is always a lovely show and wasn’t as wet this year as last. After six weeks without riding, Tim and his top horses were a bit rusty at this first come-back show. Nevertheless, Una won a jump off class and Anne finished seventh in the Grand Prix.
Better In New Forest Things were better at New Forest though. Tim was placed with Marco, Una was third in her class and Annie was second in the big class.
Booming At Bakewell Even better results at Bakewell just showed the horses were getting back in to the swing of things. Una was second and third place went to Marco in their class. Annie won the International Trial.
Cheers At Chester Annie was cheered on into second place in the big jump off class at Chester. Held on Chester racecourse it is a lovely setting. They are hoping to hold more shows there which we will be looking forward to.
Shrewsbury Winner Shrewsbury Flower Show is always a very popular show for riders and the public. Tim had a fabulous win on Annie who is really coming round to Tim’s way of riding her. Una also jumped well but got knocked down into fifth place.
Anglesey Trip Brings Results Onwards and upwards to Anglesey, where Annie was sixth in the international trial. Una won her class; and Lilly, owned by Lynn Driscoll, finished third the first day.
Scope Gets More Popular Scope has never been more popular than it was this year. There were hundreds of entries in every class. Adam rode Vini Vidi Vici (Vinnie) owned by Katherine James in the four-year-old final. On the first day they finished third and looked to have a good chance of winning going into the last day. They jumped a faultless round, which in our opinion, looked set to beat everyone. Sadly, though, they finished second. Annie jumped a super round in the Grand Prix but just got beaten by Joe Whitaker by half a second.
Charming Chantilly Chantilly, France has to be one of the most charming settings for a show. Held within the race track in front of the stables and castle, it is wonderful. Annie had a fence off on the first and second days but jumped a great first round in the Grand Prix. In the jump off, she had two down but the pressure was on with 10 horses still left to go. Woody finished second in a very quick speed class and he was placed in his other two classes. Una finished fourth in a quick two phase.
Tim On Tour So next on the schedule is Horse of the Year Show, Belfast, Lyon, Towerlands and Tim’s Tour. The special demonstration tour will take place in November, visiting locations across the country, including Myerscough College; Arena UK; West Wilts; The Grange; Merrist Wood; and Unex Towerlands.
Take a look at the web site. www.timontour.co.uk Our new main web site - www.timstockdale.com -is at last up and running at last will be kept up to date from now on.
On a final note for now, Joseph looks like he’s going to be competeting against Tim before too long, much to the shock of 34yr old Miss Muffet.
